Internews received over ten applications in response to the call for applications for the TJRC Mentored Travel Grant. A jury composed of Eric Shimoli, an editor with the Daily Nation, and Ida Jooste, the Country Director of Internews Network Kenya, met on May 5 to select the three journalists who will travel to Isiolo to report on the TJRC hearings.
The jury selected the following applications:
Chiimbiru Timothy Gimode -Radio Umoja,
Kennedy Lesiew -The Star,
Rose Odengo -a freelance online journalist.
The jury explained its choice with the following rationale:
Chiimbiru Timothy Gimode – Radio Umoja
The docket of stories proposed provided variety and good focus. A detailed description of each angle made it easy to visualize the story outcomes. The audience was well considered. As a series of stories, the proposed approach would provide new insights into this justice process for the residents of Isiolo.
Kennedy Lesiew – The Star
The focus on women and children is a necessary story, given their vulnerability. The emphasis on survivor tales and how they are coping with life was another important feature of the proposal. Internews also looks forward to the exploration and exposure of myths related to the historical injustices. This proposal provided good background and well articulated story angles.
Rose Odengo – Online
The proposal was well conceptualized and very well written. The reviewers particularly liked the emphasis on a human focus. New and fresh angles are being proposed which will add value to the understanding of justice issues in this part of the country.
The jurors’ comments on all the journalists who sent in their applications for this mentored travel grant to Isiolo will be sent to each of them next week.
The Land & Conflict Sensitive Journalism Project wishes the winners of this mentored travel grant all the best as they pursue their stories in Isiolo. For the ones who didn’t make it, we thank you for your interest. Please note there will other similar opportunities in the coming months.
The selected journalists will be supported by Trainer Kentis Onyatch during the field work (May 9-14) and the production days following thereafter.
