Sometimes a story is clear win when it comes to awards. One such story is NTV journalist Irene Choge’s “Dissent over the Cut”. It recently won her the “Best Children Rights Media Article”, as well as an award in the Kenya Media Network on Population and Development awards. Irene has been a fellow of the Internews Health journalism programme. “Dissent over the Cut”, was produced while on an Internews travel grant.
“I started as a sales person at the Nation Media Group,” said Choge, “But I knew that I would move up to sixth floor, that is where news readers sit.” And she did just that.

- Joyce Mbogo- Human Interest Award
Back home, Internews organized a festival of stories, to celebrate journalism excellence in 2011. The event, Storyfest, invited submissions from across the different media.
“We are in the business of making better story tellers ,” said Ernest Waititu, Resident Journalism Advisor for the health project at Internews, “ We found it necessary that every once in a while we meet to celebrate and remind each other of a job well done and inspire others to tell beautiful stories.”
And the winners for this year’s Story Fest were:
Dann Okoth - Overall best story and best print story winner . His story was about how climate change affects maternal and child mortality rates in arid areas in Kenya.
Zainab Deen- Best Radio story for her piece on male vasectomy
Irene Choge- Best TV story. Her story was about female circumcision.
Sidi Sarro- Best online story.
Violet Otindo- Most stories submitted.
“Story fest came at just the appropriate time,” said Dann Okoth, “I feel very proud and honored for winning.”
