Internews in Kenya is a Finalist for the First-Ever Open Data Awards

The Open Data Institute is celebrating innovation and excellence in the ways in which open data are used and published with its first-ever Open Data Awards on November 4 in London.

Internews in Kenya is a finalist, along with Plantwise and UNHCR, for the Open Data Social Impact Award, which celebrates open data used as a tool for social good.

Internews was nominated for the impactful budget tracking and county-based service delivery stories produced by journalists and trainees from its data journalism fellowship program.

The data journalism fellowship gives Kenyan journalists the opportunity and tools to learn how to capture, analyze, visualize and explain, through compelling stories, political, economic and social issues. All journalists are able to access Internews’ Data Dredger site, which exhibits the best data journalism practices as well as provides content that can be used to build and enhance data storytelling.

An additional accolade for this work is that The Change for Health app developed by Internews data journalism fellows Daniel Cheseret and Paul Wafula has received a special mention at the WMS Global Awards for Excellence 2014.
