How we became digital journalists

After completing university Samuel Born often trekked from his home in Rongai to the city centre in Nairobi in search of work.

The mass communication graduate spent months moving from one media house to another dropping his CV at the reception with the hope of clinching an interview for an internship. His former classmate, Robert K’odingo went through similar struggles.

But a week-long training in digital journalism at Internews in Kenya changed their fortunes.

“We did not learn much about digital journalism at university,” says Born. But K’odingo was not convinced that the digital training would be beneficial even though Born convinced him to apply for it.

But they now say the training was a godsend. A few months after the workshop they got online journalism jobs at Mediamax Network Limited, the owners of The People newspaper and K24 TV.

“We must have made an impression on the interview panel because of our knowledge of multimedia thanks to the Internews training,” says K’ondingo

“We are the pioneer digital Mediamax’s team. When we got our job their websites were still under construction,” K’odingo explains.
The duo manage the digital content for all the media house’s websites.
