Stigma and Secrecy Reversing Gains of War on HIV and AIDS

There is strong fear of stigma after one tests HIV positive, that most people would rather suffer than disclose their status to anyone. In Kinango, at the Coast Province statistics attest to this as the area district hospital shows that close to 53,000 people have been tested for the virus of which 18,000 tested positive, however 2,578 people only have enrolled for comprehensive care. Kinango Public Health and Sanitation officer, Mr Bonaya Bissani attributes this to the reluctance to have their status known to others, adding that this is reversing the gains made in responding to HIV.
